Tony Ishmon, 39, the grandfather of Demond Reed, wept into the open casket at Shiloh Temple in
Minneapolis on Monday night. When Ishmon broke down, he was ushered out of the sanctuary. Before the
service, he said he was still shocked by his grandson’s death. “It just doesn’t seem real,”
he said.
Most of the hundreds of people at the funeral did not know Demond Reed, 4, who was beaten to death
in a north Minneapolis duplex where he had been staying with his jailed father’s cousin. But they
came to mourn a life lost so young and to help their community work past yet another violent death.
